CHAPTER 19

Juliette Sinclair’s crimson locks fringe her face, and she looks cozy in a red pea coat and a black and white scarf around her neck. I can’t deny the fact there’s something all around likable about her.

Of course, the fact she’s surrounded by books only adds to her likability in my book. And it makes sense since we’re standing in the library fundraiser tent right here at the Harvest Moon Festival.

“I’m looking for my next book boyfriend,” I say, trying to keep the conversation light before I give her the squeeze, making her tell me everything she knows about Sergio and the urge he had to wring Lenny’s neck.

Not that I know it for a fact, but now that I’ve seen Lenny’s face myself, I can see why Sergio might feel that way. Lenny is full of that famed bravado some Italian men are known to have a touch too much of. It’s no wonder my Uncle Jimmy wants him in a casket yesterday.

“A book boyfriend?” Juliette bubbles with a laugh. “You must be a romance reader. I work at the Honey Hollow Library and we host all sorts of genre book clubs, so I recognize the lingo. “Those kinds of delicious things,” Niki says, appearing from nowhere while shoving a book in my face with a pretty girl on the cover who looks suspiciously like Lottie, and she’s juggling copious amounts of dessert. “Check out these books that are coming home with me. Apple Cider Donut Danger, Killer Halloween Cupcakes, Toxic Apple Turnovers—these books look delicious!”

Juliette laughs. “Not only do they look delicious, they are delicious.” She nods to my literary-hungry sister. “And that series you’re holding has a rather hot love triangle.”

“Love triangle?” Niki’s voice spikes with enthusiasm. “Effie, you know I’m always down for a good love triangle. Two sexy men fighting for the hand of one lucky woman? What’s not to love?”

“Lucky is an ironic word to describe the heroine of those novels,” Juliette says. “She does have a knack for stumbling upon dead bodies.”

Niki chitters my way. “I usually try to picture myself as the main character, but seeing that you just tripped over a corpse, I might imagine it’s you.”

Wonderful. I guess there’s my icebreaker.

Niki trots away to snap up another literary tome or two.

“Cream Puff Punishment!” She holds the book up as if it were her greatest triumph of discovery.

“That’s a part of the same series.” Juliette frowns. “It’s not fall-themed, though. I don’t know how it ended up here.”

“I’ll tell you,” Niki is quick to fill in the gap. “It’s called fate. And the fact it has the
